Is Courage the Key to Effective Leadership? Exploring the Impact of Courage in Leadership

Updated: Dec 13, 2024

To be a great leader, it takes more than skills, experience, intelligence, charisma, or strong business acumen.

All of those are important.

But there is one component I believe that helps amplify all of the qualities above.

It is courage.

It takes courage.

It is courage that is needed to stand up for what is right.

When speaking out on a tough issue or sticking to your values, it takes courage to lead with integrity.

Courage is not just for taking risks for the sake of glory – but instead about what’s best for the company and the people. Even when things feel uncomfortable.

Having tough conversations requires a mighty amount of courage. Giving constructive feedback, addressing conflicts, and calling out underperformance are all conversations that are not easy, but necessary.

Admitting we don't know the answers to questions takes courage.

Changing up a process or procedure in the business world takes courage, especially when trying something new or innovative without seeing the outcome with our own eyes.

How about having the courage to admit you were wrong? I have been there. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but shows others your are not shying away from things when the road gets bumpy.

Some people say that once you do a few courageous things it becomes easier the next time around. I don’t necessarily agree. I really don’t think it gets easier. Maybe I am more prepared to manage the situation and handle my own emotions, but I have never truly felt like it was easier.

But don't shy away, courage is a requirement.

I always talk about having a servant leadership and servant mentality when it comes to business and people. And being the best servant leader demands having courage.

And when we lead with courage, we inspire others to do the same. And I believe that is when the magic can happen!
