Are We Limiting Our Potential by Blindly Following Others' Ideas?

Every Tuesday at about 9PM I roll my garbage bin out to the end of the driveway to be picked up Wednesday morning.
And every single week as I am doing this I cannot for the life of me remember if I need to put out the recycling bin as well - it gets picked up every other week.
So what do I do?
I just look across the street to see if my neighbor Jerry has 1 or 2 bins at the end of his driveway.
If there is only 1 bin, I automatically assume recycling is NOT this week.
If there is 2 bins, recycling must be this week so I go grab the second bin and roll it out to be picked up.
Every single week, do I ever truly know if my neighbor Jerry is right or wrong… No.
Jerry could be doing the same thing as I am.
He could be rolling his garbage bin out wondering if it is recycling week, so he just looks over at his neighbor Robert.
And neighbor Robert, he might be rolling out his bin and looking at neighbor Karen’s house thinking “Is it recycling week?”
My method of just looking at Jerry’s house is relatively successful. I would say I have 85% success rate.
________
This type of scenario happens in business all the time.
We blindly follow other ideas, with some decent success.
We sometimes don’t truly know nor understand the process and system that others have in place.
But we still blindly follow or try to implement the same idea.
The real challenge is spending the time and energy to put in your own systems and processes in place.
It’s not easy. But more than likely will have better results than my 85% success rate just following what Jerry does.
Disclosure - I have yet to put my own system in place, but I am definitely going to ask Jerry more about his system! 😂
